About Park City Sailing Association

Park City Sailing Association (PCSA) is a vibrant, community-focused sailing program dedicated to cultivating a diverse and welcoming community of sailors in Utah. We provide enriching experiences for sailors of all ages and backgrounds through outreach, boat access, racing, social events, and educational opportunities using our well-maintained fleet and quality facilities at the stunning Jordanelle Reservoir. Nestled in Utah's mountain paradise, just a few minutes away from historic Park City old town, our programs emphasize skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun amid breathtaking scenery and year-round outdoor adventures.

PCSA boasts an active sailing community with over 600 participants and 100 vessels. Our youth sailing school, led by Head Coach Christian Koules, serves more than 30 junior sailors in advanced programs, while our Guppy program introduces the youngest learners (ages 5–7) to the joys of sailing. We're proud recipients of the 2024 US Sailing Outstanding Community Sailing Program award, the 2017 Robie Pierce Award for Adaptive Sailing, and we hosted the 2025 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship. Join us to spark confidence and a lifelong love of the water in young children in a supportive, high-altitude environment!

Position Overview

PCSA is seeking an enthusiastic, nurturing, and safety-focused Guppy Program Instructor to lead our introductory summer sailing sessions for children ages 5–7. This role is perfect for an experienced early childhood educator, kindergarten teacher, camp counselor, or childcare professional who excels at engaging young kids through play and outdoor activities.

You'll lead small groups (up to 6 children per instructor) on stable J22 keelboats, delivering AM, PM and all-day (9am – 4pm with lunch break) sessions. The focus is on entertaining kids while creating meaningful educational experiences: building water confidence, introducing wind and water basics, teaching simple boat handling, and fostering teamwork—all in a fun, low-pressure way. Sailing experience is required to safely handle a J22 solo with children on board (e.g., confident maneuvering, docking, and emergency response in variable lake conditions). No advanced racing knowledge needed—we'll provide support to obtain or refresh US Sailing Level 1 certification if required.

We offer competitive compensation starting at $3,500 per month. Additional perks include financial assistance for required certifications, access to our fleet for personal use, professional development opportunities, and immersion in Park City's world-class outdoor lifestyle, including hiking, mountain biking, cycling, and climbing in our beautiful mountains.

This is a great opportunity for a teacher or educational professional with a passion for sailing with availability during the summer months. The Sailing School summer session is June 1 to Aug 21 and - for the right candidate - we are willing to accomodate start and end dates to help fit other work committments.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate sailing sessions for children ages 5–7, using play-based learning, games, storytelling, songs, and hands-on activities to teach foundational concepts (boat parts, wind direction, steering, balance, water safety).
  • Safely skipper and handle J22 boats with up to 6 young children aboard, ensuring constant supervision and a positive, inclusive experience on the water.
  • Build water confidence and familiarity with wind/water through interactive, fun exercises while promoting emotional growth, teamwork, and social skills.
  • Maintain the highest standards of water and boating safety at all times, including rigorous life jacket protocols, weather awareness, and adherence to US Sailing/SafeSport guidelines.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with parents/guardians about daily activities, progress, and any incidents.
  • Coordinate with PCSA leadership (including Head Coach Christian Koules) on session plans, schedules, and curriculum.
  • Assist with boat setup, rigging/de-rigging, cleanup, and basic equipment maintenance.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment and support program inclusivity.

Required qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working with young children (ages 5–7) in educational, camp, or childcare settings.
  • Proven ability to entertain and engage kids creatively while maintaining structure and safety.
  • Sailing experience sufficient to safely handle and skipper a J22 keelboat independently with children on board (e.g., confident in basic maneuvers, docking, man-overboard drills, and variable conditions).
  • US Sailing Level 1 certification (required; or willingness to obtain with PCSA financial support and training assistance).
  • Enthusiastic, patient, nurturing demeanor with strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain with PCSA financial support).
  • Clean background check (required for all staff).
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather.
  • Authorization to work in the United States (we unfortunately cannot provide sponsorship).

Preferred qualifications

  • Formal background in early childhood education or related field.
  • Experience with play-based or experiential learning for young kids.
  • Additional water safety certifications (e.g., lifeguard, basic keelboat knowledge).
  • Familiarity with mountain lake conditions (e.g., wind shifts).

Benefits

  • Competitive monthly salary ($3,500 starting, negotiable based on experience).
  • Financial support for required certifications.
  • Access to PCSA's fleet (including J22s, RS Quests, and other boats) for personal sailing.
  • Discounted access to other PCSA programs for self and family.
  • Opportunity to work in an award-winning, inclusive program with scholarships available.
  • Immersive experience in Park City's outdoor community, with proximity to world-class resorts and activities.
